During December while the TVKC Christmas meeting was taking place a few of TVKC’s world class drivers took flight to Egypt.
Situated North East of Africa and surrounded by the beautiful Red Sea, Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt was the chosen destination for the 2009 Rotax World Finals. Nine of TVKC’s finest took flight to the desert bordered track to compete against the world’s finest for the incredible title of World Champion.
Each driver received a fully equipped Kart which was drawn at random to ensure maximum fairness. The Karts where then taken to the pit area where 216 drivers from 59 different countries worked alongside one another to help prepare their Kart for Race day. Team Great Britain secured a substantial place in the Pits with Five Junior Drivers, Three Senior Drivers and One DD2 driver.
Junior Max
British Champion Ed Brand Looked a hot favourite all the way through the heats in the Junior Class. Matthew Parry was always close behind Ed, keeping that World title well within his reach. By the looks of the previous races these two boys where going to produced an exciting final! Henry Hunter was watched closely by his proud father as he showed his skills on track. Keeping a level head Henry held excellent positions in each heat. European Junior Champion Josh Webster always gives 110% on track but unfortunately Josh had trouble early on. Billy Albone’s entourage of fans cheered him on in the sunshine as he raced hard and looked good in the first heats.
Senior Max
Seven times Kartmasters Champion Michael Simpson was looking for nothing other than a World Title in Egypt. He had gone to win. However engine problems proved too much for the Great British driver. A disappointed Joseph Reilly was shown 2 Black Flags for bad driving during the course of the event which meant he was unable to race in the finals. European champion Luke Varley was the true star of the Senior Max show; guaranteeing pole finishes nearly every heat. A proud Strawberry team looked on as cool headed Varley lead the way to the World Title.
DD2
With only one British driver in the DD2 class all hopes where pinned on Mike Spencer. On a completely different chassis than normal Mike spent many weeks testing for the world finals. Always in high spirits; Mike did the UK team proud both on and off track, showing support to all the drivers.
On 12th December the Rotax World Finals took place in the Egyptian sunshine. Jaw dropping racing unfolded as New World Champions where crowned; one of them being United Kingdom’s own Luke Varley.
